Favorite Book of the Weekl

 I just finished a book by an author I've never read before but loved her writing. Skeleten's Key by Stacey Green. It's book 2 in her Delta Crossroads Trilogy, and I've already gone out to get the other two. This is definitely my favorite book of the week!

I couldn't put it down. I love reading about the old south plantation homes. The secrets the author wove into this story kept me reading long into the night. I really enjoyed this book and think you will too.

Book of the Week

I just finished a new book by an author I had never read and really enjoyed it so it has become my book of the week.

The book is titled, Summer Again, A St. Caroline Novel by Julia Gabriel. This is the first in a series and I really enjoyed the story.

When It Rains, It Pours

Have you ever noticed that it seems if something goes wrong, then it doesn't quit until several other things go wrong, too. Yep, my mom always said, When it rains, it pours. I used to laugh when she'd say that. Course I was young and problems were small. Anyway, my problems could be taken care pretty easily by talking to my mom or my sister or my best friend.

Now, of course, I'm older. Gosh I hate to admit that. Tire on our truck keeps going flat so I know I'm facing buying new tires. Winter is approaching and that means draining the sprinkling system, draining the hoses and putting things away. And, of course, October is one of the busiest months of the year. I have two trips planned out of town, it's our annual Reader's luncheon which I have volunteered to help at, my brother needs my help with some medical things going on with his family, step-daughter had surgery, and I woke up this morning with a leak in the roof.

Do I laugh or do I cry? Crying really won't help but sometimes it sure seems as if that is the best answer. Laughing doesn't help either unless you think keeping my sanity is helpful and sometimes I even wonder about that.

Where do I find the time to take care of everything? Ever ask yourself that question? Oh, I'm sure you have. Well, that's exactly what I have been pondering today.

Will things work out? Yes, they always do. Will they work out the way I want them to? Who knows, but I guess the main thing is they will work out and life will go on.

I hope your life is going smoothly. It's fall, and my favorite time of year, and I want to enjoy it. I'll get through. Hopefully, you will too. Hopefully, you will find time to enjoy the crisp fall days, the beautiful fall colors, and perhaps find a book to read to relax.

M Favorite Author

Do you have a favorite author? I'm sure if you are a reader like I am, it's hard to pick just one favorite. There are so many wonderful books out there and so many amazing authors that I just love how each one tells a story, pulls me into it so much I feel like I'm friends with their hero and heroine. When I finish the book, I feel sad because I'm going to have to meet new people and go to a new town and experience something new.

Is that bad? Not really. That's what keeps me reading.

Right now, I'm reading Nicholas Sparks' book The Rescue and loving it. So I guess today my favorite author is Nicholas Sparks. His books are amazing, and I love most of the movies made from his writing.

Thought For the Week

I love thoughts. Maybe you can tell that. Anyway, here's one I found and I wanted to share it with you.

Outside my window, a new day I see
And only I can determine what kind of day it will be.
It can be busy and sunny, laughing and gay,
Or boring and cold, unhappy and grey.
My own state of mind is the determining key
For I am only the person I let myself be.
I can be thoughtful and do all I can to help
Or be selfish and think just of myself.
I can enjoy what I do and make it seem fun,
Or gripe and complain and make it hard on someone.
I can be patient with those who may not understand
Or belittle and hurt them as much as I can.
But I have faith in myself and believe what I say
And I personally intend to make the best of each day.

This is so true. Only we can determine what kind of life we will live, how we will treat others, and whether to be happy or sad.

Thought For The Day

If you don't know where you are going
How will you know when you get there?

I love this thought! I felt it would be a great thought for the day.

How many of you just let life take you? You fall into a job you didn't plan to have and after a few years it becomes your career? That's kind of what happened to me. Nearly thirty years later, I retired from a job I never dreamed of having.

Is that bad? It worked out for me, but I often wonder, if I had put more planning into where I wanted to be in life, what would life have been for me?

Right now, I retired after many years. I started a new pathway -- that of being a writer and author. This path I have taken control of. I started taking the time to write the stories bouncing in my head. I took a chance and got first one story published, then another and another until I can say I have about sixteen published stories.

I have to admit it has taken some hard work, lots of time, learning new things, taking chances, but persevering. I'm not there yet, but I hope one day I can say I made it. I know where I'm going, and I've enjoyed the ride.

Think about it. Where is your life taking you? Have you made plans, done the work, and will you know when you get there?

Take a chance - my next goal was publishing The Mountain View Café. I accomplished that goal. It's available in kindle e-book from Amazon.com.  The paperback should be released shortly. I accomplished one of my goals. What about you?

Weddings Are In The Air

It's summer which brings warm weather, flowers, and fun. It's also the time for romance and garden weddings.

As if he could read her mind, he kissed her once again.

She met his kiss with fervor, enjoying the way their tongues teased the other. The kiss deepened. She met his passion, enjoying the spicy taste mingled with a hint of the beer he’d drank. When he put his arms around her and pulled her closer, she felt his chest move up and down as he breathed. Her breasts hardened as they were tickled by the feel of his body rubbing hers.

Her arms went around him. Her hands moved across his back feeling the soft cotton of his shirt against the hardness of his muscles. She couldn’t stop herself from sliding her hand along his shoulders and up into the hair at his neckline. Thick and soft all at once.

He groaned and took a tendril of her hair, rubbing it between his fingers, and kissed her again. Soon her pony tail was pulled free and wild tresses cascaded around her shoulders. He tugged her head back and pressed his mouth harder against hers as if trying to bind them together.

Their kiss lingered. Her world spun at the electricity that surrounded them.

When he finally pulled away, the cold air slammed between them and emptiness knifed through her.

She looked into his eyes while her heart pounded. She fought to catch her breath while he ran his thumb down her cheek.

“I should stop.” He whispered.

“No. Not now.” She groaned. “Kiss me again.”

And he did. A kiss hard and full of passionate heat.

Writing Tips

It's amazing how many people I meet want to write a book. I say go for it. It's a lot of work. It's very time consuming. It's something you have to stick to and keep at it. For me, it's very satisfying to see it come to fruition - hold the  paperback in my hand and smile because it is something I created.

Here's a few writing tips I came up with that might help as you begin your journey as a writer. These tips might help even if you have already been writing or have become a published author.

Writing Tip from K. R. Bailey:

Use the five senses to make your writing come alive. Seems like it’s real easy to describe what the hero or heroine see, but using the other senses makes it so much better and brings your readers right into the scene.

Here is an example:

SIGHT: A beautiful lake nestled amidst tall pines.

SMELL: The pungent scent of pine is mixed with the smell of nearby campfires.

SOUND: A robin sings from the top of an aspen tree, and the buzz of honey bees fill the air as they seek the nectar of the myriad of wildflowers lining the path to the lake.

TOUCH: The air is cool and moist against our skin.

TASTE: The sweet, chocolatey crunch of smores heated on the campfire melt in our mouth.

By adding all five senses, I believe it builds a more rounded picture and it’s easy to relate to what our characters are experiencing.

Create scenes that come alive. Make your readers experience what your hero and heroine are by using all of the five senses.

Did you know there are lots of ghost stories about Yellowstone National Park?   I found several books about ghosts in Yellowstone. Some of the stories originated back in the 1800s.

I’ve always been intrigued with ghost stories, and because of my love of Yellowstone and some of the stories I’ve heard, I decided to write a ghost story involving Yellowstone, Eaton’s Ghost, A Yellowstone Ghost Story.

In my story you will meet a ghost or two. Yes, there is a scrumptious love story. And yes, you will get a taste of Yellowstone.

I Love ghost stories, especially when they are about places I love. Yellowstone is one of my favorite places. So I decided to write a ghost story involving Yellowstone National Park.

Helpful Hints

I bought a small pocket calendar with several helpful hints each month which I've enjoyed. I thought I'd share a few with you.

1. Use rubbing alcohol as a permanent marker remover. Pour on a cotton ball and rub on stains.

2. Use onions as a basement deodorizer. Cut the onion in half and put on a plate and leave overnight.

3. Remove gunk from your iron with dryer sheets. With low setting, rub iron over the dryer sheet.

4. Use coaster under jars of messy honey, jam or olive oil.

5. Salt and lemon juice mixed together remove mildew stains.

6. Use a muffin tin to serve condiments at an outdoor party.

7. A frozen saturated sponge in a Ziplock bag makes an icepack that won't drip.

8. Use dryer sheets to wipe down a smelly, wet dog for a springtime scent.

9. Pour a bit of vinegar into your wash with detergent. It brightens colors and eliminates odors.

10. To get rid of the bouquet residue at the bottom of a vase, fill vase with water and add two anti-acid tablets.

Kind of interesting. I haven't tried them all so if you do, I'd love to hear if it worked. Perhaps it will give you more time to do what you love -- if it's reading, I have a new book released in April - Cherry Wood Place. Give it a try in your spare time!

Tribute to A Wonderful Friend

It's been nearly a year since I got the call that my good friend Terri J. Lynn passed away. It broke my heart. Today, for some reason, she's been on my mind.

I remember the first day we met. She walked into one of our Utah Chapter of Romance Writers of America meeting and the only chair available was next to me. She stood, looking around the room, not knowing anyone -- ever been there? I have. You're a bit nervous, anxious to be seated, but wanting to feel comfortable.

I motioned to the chair by me. I asked her the usual get to know you questions -- introduced myself, asked where she was from, etc. We started to chat. We bonded. From there a friendship grew. Come to find out she and her family only lived a few miles away. I asked her if she was interested in joining a critique group. She jumped at the chance, and that's when I found out what a fantastic author she was, and how knowledgeable she was. What a great addition to our critique group.

We laughed. We criticized and made recommendations. We brainstormed along with Alysia S. Knight. Our group just clicked. We had fun. We got work done. She even suggested the name of my story, Dark Secrets. After reading it, she called me and said that had to be the name because of all the secrets revealed in my story. As soon as she said that, I knew it was what I'd name that book. Dark Secrets.

About three years ago she and her husband moved to Las Vegas. I missed her so much, but we talked now and again. We still shared bits and pieces of the books we were working on. Then I couldn't get hold of her. I worried about her, and a few months later, I received the call from her sister. Broke my heart. She had passed away.

Funny how a stranger walks into your life and your world changes. She was that type of person. Encouraged me to do better. Helped me along the way with suggestions. Pushed me at times to work a bit harder. Became a friend and mentor, and I can't thank her enough. She was a wonderful lady, and I still miss her so much.

So I wanted to write this as a tribute to her - my good friend, a wonderful critique partner, a super great person and gifted author. Rest in peace with God.

Spring is for Flowers!

I think Spring is for flowers - and, of course, beautiful clear blue skies, nice temperatures, and looking forward to spending time on my patio, grilling a good steak or just enjoying the break from winter before the hot temperatures of summer arrive.

Today was just that type of day. Actually, yesterday was too. My husband and I spent yesterday on a nice, long drive, enjoying the beautiful day. Today, it was time to get busy and get my flowers planted on my patio.

I think they turned out nice, and it felt so good to clean up the leaves that had blown in, wipe off the patio tables, and spruce things up with some color.

What do you do to bring in the warmer days and enjoy the springtime before the hot summer is on us?

Now I've got my patio just about ready to enjoy, it will be a perfect place to relax, play with my yellow lab, Shilo, or open up a good book, or in my case, turn on my kindle.  And don't forget my newest story - Cherry Wood Place - is now available in both kindle and paperback.

Enjoy the spring. Smell the lovely flowers and perhaps plant a few yourself, and don't forget to curl up and relax with a good book.

Merry Christmas!

Don't you love this time of year?

People are bustling around, lights are twinkling bright, and everywhere people are calling out greetings to each other, whether it be Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or Happy Holidays. The focus is on getting everything ready, buying just the right present to make someone happy, and finding the time to accomplish everything and still get to that holiday party you just have to attend.

At this time of year, I like to remember all that I have to be thankful for. I'm lucky to have a good family and a place to call home. I have wonderful friends that I don't see as often as I'd like, but at this special time of year, we try just a little harder to carve out some time to say hi and maybe go to lunch to catch up. For those who don't live nearby, it's a time to send off a Christmas letter, make a phone call or write a quick e-mail.

I don't get much writing accomplished, and I know I should keep to my writing schedule whenever I can, but I do try to find some time to relax, open a book or turn on my kindle and catch up on some reading. That's how I like to relax especially when the weather turns cold and stormy. I like to turn on our fireplace and pull out a good book.

However you celebrate this time of year, take some time to wind down and relax. Remember all you have to be grateful for. Remember good friends, share the love of your family, and if you are far away and can't, write a letter or make a phone call. Remember this time of year is a time for caring and sharing the love in your heart.

I picked up this book and started reading. I knew it was a novella and I was in the mood for a short story. I had no idea it would hook me and I wouldn't be able to put it down. Well, that's what happened. I didn't quit reading until the middle of the night. I had to finish it. Loved it.

If you're looking for something that is easy reading and entertaining, pick up this novella. You will enjoy it!

Hunting - Yes or No?

I just spent three days in the mountains of Northern Utah and so enjoyed it. The cool temperatures were exhilarating. The fall colors are starting to fade, but there were enough bright yellow leaves on the quaking aspens, the brilliant red orange on the oak brush, both set against a background of green pines and clear blue skies with puffy clouds making an awesome sight as we drove our ranger looking for elk. Didn't see many elk, but the deer were plentiful, mostly does and fawns enjoying the nice days. Now and again a big moose would show itself and turkeys and grouse could be seen hunting and pecking in the tall grass.

It was on one of these types of camping trips that my story, Hunting Honeymoon, was thought up. Oh, we now stay in either our cozy cabin or our motorhome with lots of conveniences (yes, flushing toilets) but in our younger days, we took our tent and had some really fun times camping.

Hunting Honeymoon brings back memories of trips where I had to find a brush to hide behind because there was no outhouse. The frustration of having my husband off hunting with his brother and friends. The warm feeling of sitting around a campfire. We cooked over the fire with Dutch ovens and I still feel like our food tasted better when we did.
